Seagulls in Gauteng

Arriving in the East Rand to drop Matthew off, I am not surprised to see thousands of Grey headed seagulls everywhere, because we not that far from Boksburg by the Sea. Actually we are here in Gauteng, over 600km from the ocean but here before my very eyes are huge nesting flocks of gulls. I know gulls are scavengers but what is here for them to eat? Surely there has to be enough to sustain such huge flocks. Okay they must have flown here but why come so far inland?

They are here all year round. Just take a drive past the huge waste dumps near Thembisa and you will see what they survive (thrive I should say) on.
